Checks on way to Floridians who suffered mortgage abuses

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is expected to announce today that more than 14,000 Floridians who were clients of Ocwen Financial Corp. mortgage servicing will receive checks totaling $16 million this week.

The money is part of the overall $2.1 billion National Ocwen Settlement reached in December last year following accusations that the Atlanta-based loan servicer hurt homeowners with “premature and unauthorized foreclosures, violations of homeowners’ rights and protections, and by using false and deceptive documents and affidavits, including robo-signing.”

The checks to Florida homeowners will equal about $1,150 each. The first wave of checks was mailed Dec. 7.

Under the 2013 settlement, Ocwen agreed to reduce principal mortgage amounts by $2 billion nationwide, and pay $125 million in cash to 185,000 homeowners who lost their homes to foreclosure between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2012.

About 31,000 eligible Floridians were mailed notices about the cash payback, but fewer than half had responded in late August as a Sept. 15 deadline to apply for the money approached.
