Nation briefs: N.Y. officers wounded in hatchet attack

post-gazette.com | October 27, 2014

NEW YORK — Investigators on Friday were closely examining the background of a man who attacked several police officers in Queens with a hatchet Thursday, focusing in part on comments he made on the Internet disparaging whites and Christians and supporting violent jihad.

The man, identified by law enforcement officials as Zale H. Thompson, attacked four rookie New York City police officers as they posed for a photograph on Jamaica Avenue just after 2 p.m. Thursday, striking one in the arm and another in the head, before he was shot and killed by other officers. A stray bullet also struck a bystander in the back.

Officer Kenneth Healey, 25, was hospitalized in serious but stable condition with a severe wound to the back of his head. Officer Joseph Meeker, 24, who was struck in the arm, was expected to be released.

Officials have not given a motive for the attack.

Remains identified

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Remains found nearly a week ago in a rural area of Virginia are those of a University of Virginia sophomore who disappeared last month, authorities said Friday, ending a search by thousands that took weeks and left the campus and community on edge.

Hannah Graham, 18, disappeared Sept. 13 after a night out with friends. The remains were found Oct. 18 about 12 miles from the Charlottesville campus, in a heavily wooded area of Albemarle County. The state medical examiner’s office confirmed that the remains were Ms. Graham’s, the Albermarle County Police Department said in a statement.

The man she was last seen with, Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., 32, has been charged with abduction with intent to defile.

Teen bride acknowledged

SALT LAKE CITY — The Mormon church acknowledges in a new essay that founder Joseph Smith had a teenage bride and was married to other men’s wives during the faith’s early polygamous days, a recognition of an unflattering part of its roots that historians have chronicled for years.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says most of Mr. Smith’s wives in the 1830s and 1840s were between 20 and 40 years old. One, however, was a 14-year-old girl who was the daughter of Mr. Smith’s close friends.

The essay posted this week on the church’s website marked the first time the Salt Lake City-based religion has officially acknowledged those facts, though it has not denied them.

New security check

CHICAGO — Chicago Transit Authority train riders will be subject to random baggage screening next month as a part of a new security initiative to sweep for explosives at transit stations, Chicago police and CTA officials announced Friday.

Starting Nov. 3, mobile explosives screening teams consisting of up to six Chicago police officers will be positioned outside the turnstiles at some transit stations, said Nancy Lipman, commander of the department’s public transportation section.

Similar security measures have been implemented in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Boston and Washington, D.C., she said.

Radio host convicted

CHICAGO — A federal jury Friday convicted former national radio host Warren Ballentine of participating in Chicago-area mortgage fraud schemes that bilked lenders out of nearly $10 million.

After a four-day trial, the jury deliberated about an hour and a half before convicting Mr. Ballentine on all six counts of bank, mail and wire fraud and making false statements to lenders.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly set sentencing for Jan. 21. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, though his sentence under federal guidelines could be far less.
